While human-centered design (HCD) is not new in the learning space, the Early Learning Lab focuses on interrupting unequal learning outcomes by starting with the folx being served. They offer behavioral science-based coaching to assist organizations who work with families, teachers, and caregivers in creating impact frameworks and pinpointing ways to best partner with and ultimately serve each of these groups.

In 2002, City of Portland residents voted to create The Levy—an initiative that now generates nearly $20M in funding. Powered by a local property tax, funding helps families experiencing hardship pay for childcare so that they don't pay more than eight percent of their gross income for childcare. The Levy also increases children’s access to proven programs that support positive early development, school engagement and academic achievement, high school graduation, and family safety and stability.
